The firm up the street.
Oak & River started in 2012 with two desks above a bakery on Churton Street and a simple idea: the people of Orange and Chatham counties shouldn't have to drive to a city tower for good legal help.
Jim Calder and Sarah Whitfield had both practiced at larger firms, and both kept meeting neighbors who put off wills, signed leases they didn't understand, or lost sleep over a boundary line — because lawyers felt far away.
Where we are now
So we became the firm up the street. Today seven attorneys work from storefront offices in Hillsborough and Pittsboro.
We close homes and farms, write estate plans at kitchen tables, keep family businesses running between generations, and settle disputes in ways that let people keep waving to each other at the market.
About the name
The oak is Hillsborough's — steady and old. The river is the Eno — it keeps moving. Good counsel needs both.
What we value
- Plain English — if you can't explain a trust to a neighbor, you don't understand it yet.
- Show up — kitchen-table meetings, weekend calls before a Monday closing.
- Keep the peace — the best dispute resolution preserves the relationship.
